It
is clear that a drug and alcohol problem exists among teens in the town of
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. In a survey conducted, 88% of teens from Wauwatosa East
High School said they knew at least 10 people who frequently use drugs or
alcohol, with 69% saying they themselves participated at least once a week.
There is no arguing that this is a problem, but there is room for discussion on
what the best solution is. Currently, there are virtually no public places for
teens to go, with the recent parental guidance law at the local mall and bitter
cold weather. Many teens resort to using drugs or alcohol for fun because
“there is nothing else to do.” One possible solution to curb this intoxicating
problem would be the creation of a teen center close by the schools. That being
said, creating a teen center is a huge project, with countless individuals
involved. Many pros and cons need to be weighed before a big financial decision
like this is made, and this analysis will touch on a variety of these factors. Would
creating a youth center for the teens of Tosa be worth it in the end?

I have a few question about the post. How are all of these teens getting alcohol so easily because that means there is a serious problems with local businesses sell alcohol to minor and/or a problem with their parents. How is a teen center going to help because a school create many of these events. I have read your website and I think it is good but I could not find any counter argument for the teen center.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Keenan's comment as well regarding the post. It is a well known idea that if teens want something like alcohol, they will find a way to get it, whether it is through their parents or through older friends and siblings. I believe the problem is not about stopping the teens from doing these things, but creating other opportunities to fill the teen's time. Also, it is hard to estimate something like a teen center with facts and percentages that do not define the age groups of the teens and statistics that are not viable sources. The town of Tosa should come together to create a plan for the teens within the community, not only to decide on building a teen center in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think that creating a teen center is a creative way to go about tackling the issue of teenage drug and alcohol abuse. I think a teen center sounds more appealing to teenagers opposed to saying they are “going to rehab.” It may make teenagers feel better about fixing their drug and alcohol problems. I also really enjoyed your website.
ReplyDeleteEven though creating a teen center seems like the best option, I think the hardest part would be to convince the teens to go. I know that around my house there are a variety of recreation centers, but a large majority of teens in my school and surrounding school still smoke marijuana.
