Texting While Driving

Texting while driving is an obvious distraction from the road. When a person is texting and driving, they are no longer focusing their attention on their vehicle, the vehicles that surround them, nor the pedestrians and construction workers who can be in their path. This has caused devastating effects on drivers, victims and their families when people are distracted behind the wheel of a vehicle. We need to enact new laws in our country to protect our citizens against the damaging consequences that can result from texting while driving. While there are laws in place to discourage this practice, they are not nearly enough. My intention is to require the residents of the City of Chicago as to download a software solution that will disable the texting feature while traveling above 10 MPH in a vehicle.  If this solution is successful, other cities will hopefully follow my example and incorporate this feature in other cities. This could lead to the complete elimination of a problem that is becoming an epidemic in our country, regardless of the intent of our current laws.

  1. I believe that this is a very good idea that could possibly save many lives and be a better solution that simply making more laws. However, an argument that I would make regarding this issue is who would make this software program? I understand that it can be very simple to implement but it would require funding and other financial needs. Additionally, how would the city know if an individual downloaded the particular program? I think it would be a really good idea but there would also be some areas of concern that should be considered.

  3. I think you make a really good point about how texting and driving can be dangerous to not only yourself, but whoever is on the road or in the car with you. I thought your overall topic idea was great, and very important and relevant to today's society. Do you feel like a policy change could be effective or more of a public awareness advocacy thing?

  4. I think the public is already aware of the dangers of texting and driving but due to cell phone addiction and the thought that "it wont happen to me" they somewhat avoid the fact that they are putting their lives and everyone else on the road in danger. I think a policy change would be most effective and would result in greater adherence.

  5. I think that your topic is a very good idea that people need to be aware of because it does pertain to a lot of people. There is a good majority of people who are guilty about texting while driving because we are all over confident of our driving skills and won't stop until something bad happens.
